Sonora PD Officer Attacked By Vehicle Thief

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — A man being arrested for stealing a vehicle tried to pick a fight with a Sonora Police Department officer.

The PD reports that an officer took a vehicle theft report at 7:30am on Saturday. The 2001 Ford Expedition was left unlocked and the keys were inside. Soon thereafter the officer spotted a vehicle matching the description in the area of Saratoga Road. The driver, later identified as 20-year-old Dane Holmsky of Monterey, first attempted to elude the officer, but then pulled into the driveway of a nearby residence. Holmsky tried to act as if he knew who lived at the home, but the resident did not know him.

Arriving officers ordered Holmsky to stop, but he refused. When one of the officers grabbed Holmsky by the arm, Holmsky punched the officer in the face. An electronic tasing device was deployed on Holmsky and he was successfully taken into custody.

Medics responded to check and treat Holmsky. Immediately afterwards, however, he jumped up and tried to run away from custody. The attempt did not go well for him, as the PD says he tripped and fell face first into a group of mailboxes. Holmsky was soon booked into Tuolumne County Jail on a variety of charges.

The PD reports the officer injured in the attack suffered a cut to his upper lip.
