A Close Call At A School Crosswalk

Sponsored by:

San Andreas, CA — The CHP reports a rear-end collision in San Andreas happened in front of a crosswalk as students were being ushered through.

The crash happened during the busy noon hour on Highway 49 at the intersection of California Street near Calaveras High School.  The CHP reports 26-year-old Michael Kooyaka was in the northbound lane of the highway waiting as students were crossing when another vehicle plowed into the back of his vehicle.  That driver, 29-year-old Jessica Reyes of San Andreas failed to notice Kooyaka’s stopped vehicle.  Officer Rebecca Myers notes, “If her speed had been faster, she could have knocked him into the crosswalk into the children. It could have been a lot worse.”

A passenger in Kooyaka’s vehicle, 25-year-old Justin Wilson suffered minor injuries in the wreck.  Myers cautions that this is a perfect example of how distracted drivers can cause accidents and threaten lives.
