Forest Roads And Trails To Open

Sonora, CA – The Stanislaus National Forest (STF) will open up more areas for visitors to travel, starting Wednesday.

Roads and trails that were closed on December 15 will open, unless they are not yet ready for travel, according to SNF spokesperson Rebecca Garcia. She adds, “It may be that some of our personnel will go out there to open gates and roads, and find that the weather just doesn’t permit it. If that’s the case, those will open, weather permitting.”

Garcia warns visitors to drive defensively, especially in burn scar areas like the Rim Fire and El Portal, which present possible hazards. “That’s not just for driving, it’s also for if you’re walking out there,” says Garcia. “They are full of potential hazards. For instance, if there were strong winds that day…there’s several trees and limbs…weakened by drought and fire…those could fall over; so it’s definitely worth being cautious.”
