Structure/Vegetation Fire Under Investigation

Columbia, CA — Cal Fire Officials report they are investigating what sparked yesterday’s fire on north Bald Mountain Road.

Cal Fire Capt. Mike Spear says, “There was no sign of an accelerant used, but the blaze is under investigation.”

Flames broke out just before 3 p.m. at a Granny Cottage on north Bald Mountain Road near the intersection of Big Hill Road northeast of Columbia. Spear says the cottage was damaged on the roof and an exterior wall. The flames spread to nearby vegetation and about 2 ½ acres was burned.

Spear adds, “Cal Fire will have a hand crew and a couple of engines throughout the weekend out there. We’ve been concerned with some of the winds we have had over the last two days so we will be out there making sure all of the area is properly extinguished and everything stays in the original burn area.”

Five engines, two hand crews and three water tenders battled the blaze for about an hour before they got the flames under control yesterday.
