Sonora’s Mayor Not Seeking Re-Election

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — Hank Russell will not seek re-election this June, and the field of City Council candidates hoping to take his place is starting to expand.

There will be two seats on the ballot, and the positions are currently held by Russell and Matt Hawkins. Hawkins has taken out the needed paperwork, and plans on seeking re-election. Other candidates that have done the same include Jim Grinnell, Mark Ferreira, Jim Garaventa, and George Segarini. The election is at-large, so the top two vote getters will win the seats.

Russell has spent 12 years on the City Council, and currently serves as Mayor. He says, “It’s been a great run, and there are a lot of real decent people that I’ve met and worked with.”
Russell and his wife had move to Sonora from the Bay Area. “I came up here to retire, and that was 15 years ago, and I still haven’t retired,” he said jokingly. “So I think it’s time.”

City Council candidates can file for the election up until March 7th.
