Calaveras County Hires
San Andreas, CA — New top ranking officials will be filing into the Calaveras County government office.
Peter Maurer of El Dorado County has been selected to be the new Planning Director. Maurer has more than 30 years of experience in both planning and building departments, including 28 years in El Dorado County. Currently he is the El Dorado County Planner.
Calaveras County District 5 Supervisor Darren Spellman says, “Peter is a well-experienced individual who the Board feels is a great fit for Calaveras County to lead us into the future.”
Maurer will be the seventh director in eight years. He replaces Rebeca Willis who left in August of last year. County Administrator Lori Norton admits it has been a revolving door position.
“We have had our challenges retaining Planning Directors,” says Norton. “He (Maurer) is coming to us eyes wide open.”
One of the top priorities for Maurer will be working on the General Plan. Norton adds that El Dorado’s General Plan process was very controversial and involved litigation so he is well prepared to deal with this issue. Maurer’s first day on the job will be March 3rd.
In addition, Calaveras County resident Mike H. Miller has been named the Interim Public Works Director while the county looks for a permanent replacement. This is the second time Miller has filled this role. He also took on the position from 2007 to 2009. This time the job will be for six months to a year. Norton says they are not looking to hire anyone right away, as she wants Miller to assist in streamlining, consolidating, improving efficiency and filling some key positions in the department.
