Sonora Elementary Book Drive Through Sunday
A community wide Book Drive continues through Sunday, to help replace the more than 2,000 classroom library books lost in the Sonora Elementary School fire.
B.Z. Smith, local arts advocate and storyteller, was Wednesday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.
The local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma (an international society of female educators), is helping to lead the drive.
According to Smith, the community is encouraged to drop off new or gently used books for elementary school students (ages nine through thirteen years old) at Cost-U-Less in Sonora during business hours through Sunday night.
Smith will also host the 5th annual “Santa’s Gone Hawaiin” family holiday concert this Saturday beginning at 11 am, with plenty of stories and sing-along holiday tunes. Peg Reza’s Blue Shoes Ukulele Orchestra Plus will be there, and Santa himself has verified that he will visit with both the children and adults.
This is a fund raiser for Delta Kappa Gamma’s family literacy projects. Tickets are $5 each, plus at least one canned food item for the Mother Lode Food Project and/or one book for Sonora Elementary School. The event will be cancelled if there is snow in Sonora.
The KVML “Newsmaker of the Day” is heard every weekday morning on AM 1450 KVML at 6:46, 7:45 and 8:45am.
