Ranchers Challenged
San Andreas, CA — A Murphys couple has challenged area ranchers to follow their example. John and Michelle Rugo of Murphys heard about the great need at The Resource Connection Food Bank in Calaveras County and decided to do something about it. They donated 160 pounds of fresh hamburger and steaks.
Food Bank Director Jeannie Hayward says, “This is a huge treat! We are seeing 60 to 80 families a day so to be able to get fresh meat during the month really makes a difference.”
The couple packaged the meat in one pound cuts and steak cuts which will last the food bank about two days. That’s one reason for the couple’s challenge to other ranchers.
“Their hope was that other ranchers would see their gifting and decide it isn’t that hard to do. I would be thrilled if our ranchers in our community got on board and say we can do that or maybe we can do better,” says Hayward.
The food bank feeds nearly 1,000 families a month.
