Scesa Talks About New Role

Sonora, CA — It has been a busy time for Tom Scesa after being asked to become the new General Manager of the Tuolumne Utilities District.

Scesa was Friday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.

Scesa has recently been serving as the District’s Engineer, and prior to that, owned a private engineering company in downtown Sonora for about 13 years. Scesa says he hopes the transition will be a fresh opportunity for the board and staff to work together in a positive direction.

“Like almost all utilities in our state, there is a lot of infrastructure that is aging,” says Scesa. “So I will be looking forward to trying to establish a plan that will allow us to prioritize each of the areas, whether it be water or sewer, and come up with a plan to keep them operating and functioning as best they can.”

The Tuesday decision of the T.U.D. Board to buyout former General Manager Pete Kampa’s contract was controversial. Scesa comments on whether it will be difficult to keep the staff together and stay on the same page. “We have a great staff here, and we met and discussed the incident of Mr. Kampa leaving, and we talked about moving forward in a positive direction,” Scesa says. “So I believe that the staff is dedicated, and will continue to do the great job they have been doing in taking care of the utilities.”

Some of the bigger projects that Scesa has been involved with in recent years are the new treatment plants in the Big Hill and Monte Grande areas, helping to secure grant funding for those facilities. Board President Mike Sarno stated that Scesa will officially be appointed to the General Manager position at the next T.U.D. meeting.

The “Newsmaker of the Day” is heard every weekday morning on AM 1450 KVML at 6:45, 7:45 and 8:45am.
