Dixie Dodges Death Sentence

A stay of execution for Dixie.

Calaveras County citizens and politicians debated the fate of Dixie the Dalmatian for more than an hour yesterday, ultimately deciding to let Dixie live. The 2-year-old dog napped in the back of the room as her fate was debated.

Monday, supervisors voted to make some changes in their animal control policies, including differentiating between dogs that are immediately adoptable, those treatable for aggressive tendencies, and those incurably hostile.

The board granted a one-time exemption to Dixie, who will stay with Board Chairwoman Merita Callaway while continuing “reprogramming” training.

Dixie has been at the center of a controversy regarding the county animal shelter’s adoption policy.
