Cocaine Discovered After Accident
A Delano couple is in jail after Tulare County sheriff’s deputies found nearly 60 pounds of cocaine hidden in their car and home.
Twenty-eight-year-old Sonia Gonzalez was arrested after authorities say she sideswiped a big rig Wednesday. Officials say the crash tore off the passenger side of the car, revealing 26 pounds of cocaine hidden in the side panels. After searching her home, deputies found an additional 33 pounds of drugs and arrested Gonzalez´ husband – Martin Sepulveda.
The couple is facing charges for possession of cocaine, possession of cocaine for sale and child endangerment. California Highway Patrol officers say the couple’s 2-year-old son was a passenger in Gonzalez´ car but was not properly secured in his seat. The boy remains in critical condition at Children’s Hospital in Madera where he is being treated for serious head injuries.
Witnesses say Gonzalez did not call police or ask for help after the accident, but instead hid packages from the car in a nearby vineyard. Officials say that if the boy dies, the couple could face murder charges.
