Hetch Hetchy Pipeline Repaired

Sponsored by:

Repairs have been completed on a valve that got stuck and cut in half the amount of water reaching San Francisco Bay area customers via the Hetch Hetchy water system.

The valve got stuck Sunday when it was closed to help workers repair a pipe that burst near Modesto. The break sent a geyser of water shooting 100 feet into the air for some nine hours. The repairs were completed yesterday afternoon. It will be later today before everything’s back to normal.

Officials estimate that 70 million gallons were lost before repairs were completed.

Some two and a half million people in the Bay Area use water from the Hetch Hetchy system, which carries water almost 200 miles from the Sierra Nevada.

It´s not clear yet what caused the damage Sunday.
