Davis Signs Ephedra Bills

Sponsored by:

Gov. Gray Davis has signed two bills calling for warning labels on any products containing the herbal dietary supplement ephedra. Two years ago, Davis vetoed a similar bill. But Friday he says the federal government hasn´t acted fast enough, so the state must step in. One bill signed by Davis calls for specific warnings to be on the labels of all products with ephedra while the second requires those labels to be clear and conspicuous.

The Food and Drug Administration has reports of 100 deaths among users of ephedra, a popular herb commonly used for weight loss and body building. The New England Journal of Medicine two years ago cited about 1,000 reports of complications linked to the herb since the mid-1990s.
