Three CDF firefighters from Calaveras County were critically injured when their fire engine plunged 60 feet down a freeway embankment in San Bernardino. The fire engine was traveling southbound on Interstate 15 when it rolled off the freeway at about 6 p.m. yesterday en route to a fast-moving brush fire. The crew was based at the West Point CDF station and had been called to supplement San Bernardino area crews. CHP investigators say the engineĀ“s drive shaft malfunctioned, forcing the truck to careen across the freeway and roll over the side.
