Assembly Pays Female Staff Member

Sponsored by:

The Assembly reportedly paid a female staff member 140-thousand dollars to settle a sexual harassment complaint.

The Sacramento Bee says the settlement was reached in May of 2000. The newspaper obtained the information through the Legislative Open Records Act. In the settlement, the Assembly Rules Committee denies any admission of liability or that the Assembly acted wrongly.

The settlement identifies Rebecca Miles, who worked for the Assembly from February 1997 to May 2000, but does not identify the people she alleges harassed her.

The Bee did obtain complaints filed by Miles that allege her supervisor and Assemblyman Lou Papan of Millbrae harassed her.
