Man Takes LAPD On Slow Ride

Sponsored by:

A paraplegic man, who used hand controls to drive his van, led officers on a low-speed chase that ended when he smashed into a city bus and ran over a fire hydrant, narrowly missing a group of children walking down the street.

It began at about one Friday afternoon with a report that a man tried to run over his own mother.

LAPD Lieutenant Robert Hauck says police located Carl Simmons Junior´s van and tried to pull him over but he refused to stop. The chase continued until Simmons hit the bus.

Simmons was treated for minor injuries then booked for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon.

Seven passengers on the bus and the bus driver were taken to local hospitals after complaining of neck and back injuries.
