The Democrats´ new whip in the House, Nancy Pelosi, pledged today to mix imagination with the arm-twisting that
is more typical of her new job. Republican Speaker Dennis Hastert of Illinois and House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt praised Pelosi at an elaborate ceremony in the Capitol´s Statuary Hall to mark her ascension to whip. Pelosi´s husband, Paul, their five children, dozens of lawmakers and Bay Area politicians were on hand. Pelosi is the first woman to rise so high in Congress. She is 61.
