Young Patient Is Released

Sponsored by:

An infant weighing only one-point-four pounds has been released from a Palo Alto hospital after recovering from open-heart surgery.

Sabrina Brown is one of a set of triplets born 15 weeks premature in December. She suffered from a life-threatening heart and lung condition that prevented a sufficient amount of oxygen from making it to the rest of her body.

Doctors at the Lucile Packard Children´s Hospital say they couldn´t find a record of the surgery ever performed on an infant weighing less than 1000 grams, almost twice Sabrina´s weight. But without the surgery, Sabrina would probably have died.

Sabrina was transferred to a Sacramento hospital yesterday, where her family lives, and is expected to fully recover.
