The Coast Guard has seized a record-breaking amount of drugs in recent weeks. Between mid-January and mid-March, the agency captured nearly 20 tons of cocaine and five-and-a-half tons of marijuana off the Mexican coast.
The largest seizure came on February 12th when Coast Guard cutters found more than 12 tons of cocaine.
Authorities say their new “Operation New Frontier´´ has helped the effort because armed helicopters and speedboats now are being used to intercept smugglers.
Investigators say about 80 percent of the illegal drugs entering the United States are brought in via ocean routes.
