A routine traffic stop outside Madera ended in gunfire as two people in the car traded gunshots with a sheriff´s deputy.
The man in the passenger seat was killed last night by the officer´s bullets. Madera County sheriff´s spokeswoman Erica Stuart says the deputy was less than three feet from the stopped car when the two men in the car opened fire. The deputy was unhurt. He shot back as the car sped off through an orchard. Another patrol car cut off the suspects. The driver got out of the car and left the dead passenger behind.
Deputies continue looking for the driver this morning. Several guns were found inside the vehicle — and authorities say there´s a good chance the driver has been wounded.
