Head-On Crash Claims Woman’s Life
A woman is dead after a head on collision with a big rig dump truck on Highway 108 just past noon Monday.
CHP officers at the scene say the unidentified woman driver was headed westbound from the Jamestown area when, for an unknown reason, pulled directly into the path of the eastbound ten-wheeler dump truck.
Investigators say the impact of the crash was right on the Woods Creek bridge and totally ripped away the front end of the four-door Mercury Topaz. The crash sent oil, diesel fuel and debris all over the roadway and into the creek. The dump truck skidded off the roadway, down an embankment and into Woods Creek.
A TUD water main at the bridge was sheared off during the crash, sending a geyser of water shooting into the air.
CHP estimated the Highway would be closed until at least 3:30 or 4 p.m. this afternoon. The name of the woman has not yet been released by the CHP.
Traffic was backed up in both directions for several miles. Eastbound traffic is being diverted off the Highway onto Bell Mooney Road and westbound traffic at Harvard Mine Road.
