Assembly OK´s Releasing Some Prisoners
The state Assembly wants to save up to $2 million a year by releasing incapacitated prisoners to skilled nursing homes. It passed a bill yesterday that would apply to about 20 current inmates.
Prison officials say they can save about $50,000 yearly for each prisoner released. Inmates with life sentences are ineligible and prisoners must be declared no threat to society.
The bill now returns to the state Senate for agreement before tomorrow´s legislative deadline.
