There will be no Soap Box Derby in Sonora this year.
Sheala Wilkinson with the City of Sonora says at the end of the sign-up deadline Friday afternoon, numbers were still nine short of reaching the number needed to make the derby a reality this year.
“The Third Annual Soap Box Derby will be canceled,” she said this morning. “We did not get enough entries.”
She said the city had to set a minimum number and stick by that rule. “If we were just a little closer we probably would have let it go, but we´re nine short, so we are canceling it.”
Wilkinson said if they didn´t get enough entries this year, there probably was no longer enough interest in the event to have it again. “So, we probably won´t,” she said.
She said the staff is saddened by the fact the derby will not be run this year. “We all enjoyed it and all the volunteers loved it,” Wilkinson said. “And of course, we loved working with the parents and children. We´ll miss that part of it.”
