The Pentagon confirmed Thursday that a San Diego based Navy medic was killed in action this week in Iraq.

The family of 25-year-old Michael Vann Johnson Junior says officials told them that the Arkansas native died Tuesday when a grenade exploded near him. The hospital corpsman was killed while tending to a wounded soldier. Johnson was assigned to the Third Marine Division Detachment.

He lived in San Diego with his wife. He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, and grew up there. He was a graduate of the University of Central Arkansas in Conway.
