New Sex Offender Rules Clear Hurdle

Sponsored by:

An Assembly committee has approved a bill that would require convicted sex offenders to renew their driver€™s licenses each year. Backer€™s say that will help the state track convicted rapists and child molesters who are required to register with local law enforcement.

The Associated Press reported in January that California had lost track of about 44% of its 70,000 sex offenders.

The bill would require that sex offenders update their address with the Department of Motor Vehicle and provide a current photograph. The cost would be offset by the $15 renewal charge.

Currently, drivers must renew their licenses with the D.M.V. at least every 5 years.
