More than 400 well wishers gathered last night in Tracy to bid farewell to Marine Gunnery Sergeant Joseph Menusa, who was killed 2 weeks ago in combat in Iraq.
Friends and family members mourned the 33 year old Menusa, a veteran of the 1991 gulf war, with prayers, hymns and the American and Philippines national anthems. Menusa was born in the Philippines and immigrated here when he was 10.
Last week, he was posthumously awarded U.S. citizenship. After family members spoke, parents of young men Menusa recruited expressed their gratitude for the influence he had on their sons´ lives. They said he encouraged recruits to build self-confidence by getting good grades and seeing the world beyond their own community.
