Sourthern California Soldier Dies

A 25 year old Army sergeant from Southern California has died of injuries he suffered when a cluster bomb exploded in Iraq. Sergeant Troy Jenkins´ mother says her son died while trying to save an Iraqi child from being harmed.

According to a news release placed on the Army Central Command´s Web site, 4 soldiers were injured when a child tried to turn over an unexploded ordinance and a soldier “attempted to remove it from the child´s hand.” The child suffered minor injuries. The cause of the explosion is under investigation.

Jenkins was a member of the Army´s 101st Airborne Division based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The Pentagon lists his address as Ridgecrest, California. He is survived by a wife and 2 children who live in Twentynine Palms.
