Sewage Leak Didn´t Threaten Public Health
Tuolumne County Health officials say the drinking water in Sonora was never in any danger of being contaminated because of this week´s sewer spill at Phoenix Lake. Mike McGee with the Health Department says leaks like this happen a few times a year. He says the health department is always pleased with the way the Tuolumne Utilities District cleans up the spills.
He says signs were put up around the lake so that people who might want to enjoy the lake would know there was a problem.
About 1,000 gallons of raw sewage leaked from a pipe into the lake early Tuesday. Tuolumne Utilities District officials diverted water around that area so that none of the polluted water could reach the Sonora Water Treatment Plant, which supplies drinking water to the city.
