Bakersfield police are asking the mother of a toddler found more than a week ago wandering in East Bakersfield to call them back. Police received a voicemail message over the weekend from a woman who identified herself as “Xochitl” and claimed to be the boy´s mother. In Spanish, she asked police to find a good home for her son.
Detective Mary DeGeare says it´s too early to tell if the woman would face criminal prosecution. DeGeare says investigators are following up on several tips about the whereabouts of the boy´s father. She says the boy, now believed to be two-year-old Jose Perez Florez, is safe, happy, well fed and a pleasure to be around. He remains in foster care.
