There are now just seven days left to go before a constitutional deadline for the State Legislature to adopt a budget agreement. But so far, there appears to be no consensus in sight.
A joint legislative committee charged with shaping a final plan has not yet to take up the largest budget issues. Democrats will need Republican support to pass a budget, and Republicans say they won´t agree to any spending plan which hikes taxes. Democrats want to add higher taxes to the mix.
Education groups plan to announce today a $1 million dollar advertising campaign that appeals to voters to demand a budget that´s passed on time. Educators hope the print ads and direct-mailers will persuade voters to pressure legislators to pass the budget by Sunday.
