Firefighters in Madera County battled eight arson fires yesterday that burned 485 acres along a 10-mile stretch near Highway 99.
Authorities say the first fire in a field was reported at about noon in north Madera County, followed by seven more blazes that threatened homes and livestock. Two barns and an abandoned house were destroyed, but no injuries were reported. The last blaze of the eight fires was put out at about 4:30 pm.
Police were prepared to evacuate 50 homes but firefighters were able to contain the blazes. Authorities have no suspects but say the investigation will continue.
