Rifle Shot Blasts Through Resort Rooms

Sponsored by:

Six tourists from the Netherlands staying at the Lake Tulloch Resort in Copperopolis were awakened Friday morning when a rifle bullet ripped through their rooms.

The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m., according to a report by Deputy Mark Mead. The shot was fired from across the portion of Lake Tulloch at O´Byrnes Ferry Bridge, passing through a maid´s room on the second floor, through an occupied bedroom, shattering a picture in that room and a mirror on the opposite side of the wall in a second bedroom before lodging in the far wall of the second bedroom.

The bullet´s path took it over two occupied beds, one of which held a man and his 4-year-old son, passing about 1.5 feet over them.

Five anglers fishing off the edge of the resort´s parking lot all said they saw a muzzle flash and heard a rifle shot on the Tuolumne County side of the lake.

Resort employees told Mead there were no problems at the resort or the bar during the day.

No suspects have been identified at this time and a copy of Mead´s report has been forwarded to the Tuolumne County Sheriff´s Department.
