Mariposa Fire Forces 300 From Homes

A fire is scorching 400 acres in Mariposa and firefighters have evacuated about 300 homes in the Mormon Hills area, about 3 miles south of Mariposa.

A spokeswoman from the California Department of Forestry in Mariposa said one structure, an outbuilding and one boat have been destroyed. The fire started at around one o´clock Thursday afternoon.

An evacuation center is set up at the Mariposa Fairgrounds.

More than 350 personnel are fighting the fire, including helicopters and air tankers. Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire, which started on private property.
