Forest Service Recognizes Local Retiree

The U.S. Forest Service has recognized one of its own in Sonora for 25 years of work.

Paul Metcalf is retiring from the Forest Service after a quarter of a century and he´s been given the prestigious Golden Smokey Bear Award for outstanding service is wildland fire prevention.

It´s the highest such national honor that one can receive.

During his tenure, Metcalf developed fire prevention posters, taught wildland fire prevention topics in classrooms, and helped educate employees and volunteers.

Metcalf was honored this week at the Sonora Opera Hall.
