Closings Begin Today in Peterson Case

After 23 weeks of testimony, the Scott Peterson double-murder case will soon be in the hands of the jury.

Closing arguments are to expected to begin this morning when trial resumes at 9:30.

The judge has set aside two days for attorneys to present their final statements.

Prosecutors will go first, followed by the defense closing and then a prosecution rebuttal.

Jurors could begin deliberations as early as Wednesday.

Prosecutors say Peterson killed his pregnant wife, Laci, and then dumped her body in the San Francisco Bay.

Defense attorneys allege someone else abducted Laci Peterson and killed her.

Prosecutors will tell jurors why they believe Scott Peterson should be convicted in his pregnant wife´s murder when they begin their closing arguments.

The jury will have two choices should they decide to convict Scott Peterson, one of which would spare him a possible death sentence.

If he is convicted of first-degree murder, he could face the death penalty or life in prison without parole.

Second-degree murder carries a shorter sentence and no chance of death penalty.
