Deep snow is hampering authorities in their search for a cross-country skier from Pacific Grove believed buried in an avalanche north of Lake Tahoe. And on Tahoe´s south shore, a cell phone was credited for saving the life of a snowboarder trapped in an avalanche near the Heavenly ski resort.
Nevada County sheriff´s deputies say the search for the missing skier was complicated by two to three feet of new snow since Thursday´s avalanche in a remote, rugged area west of Truckee.
Searchers are having difficulty finding the avalanche´s path because of the snow. The search was called off at 5 this afternoon and is to resume this morning. Deputies say the skier´s name isn´t being released at the request of his family.
