Hundreds of fisherman headed out from Santa Cruz, Moss Landing and Monterey yesterday for the start of sport salmon season. The recreational limit on salmon is two fish at least 24 inches per angler. The season concludes at the end of September. The commercial salmon season begins May first.
Meanwhile, fisherman are now pulling in what they say is a healthier tuna — low in mercury and high in beneficial fish oils. Hundreds of small trolling boats venture hundreds of miles off the coast to catch the young tuna that aren´t old enough to accumulate higher mercury levels. The new Monterey Bay Aquarium´s Seafood Watch calls troll-caught tuna a “best choice” — for consumers.
