San Andreas, CA — Calaveras County Sheriff´s Deputies say an attempted traffic stop over the weekend led to a high-speed chase that spanned more than 26 miles.

A report indicates that Sheriff´s officers attempted to pull over a car being driven by 28-year-old Shawn Melcher of Valley Springs at about 12:30 a.m. for an expired registration and excessive speed.

The pursuit began in Wallace and headed toward San Joaquin County at speeds in excess of 100 miles-an-hour.

Authorities say the chase ended at Highway 4 and Jack Tone Road where CHP officers deployed a spike strip to flatten the car´s tires.

Melcher and a passenger, 34-year-old Donnette Brown of Ione were transported to the Calaveras County Jail on charges of obstruction of justice.

Melcher faces an additional charge of felony evading. He was booked on $20,000 bail.
