Modesto, CA — An inmate who escaped from a medium-security Stanislaus County jail was captured yesterday. Authorities still are looking for five other escapees, including one charged with a violent crime.
33-year-old Robert Banks was arrested shortly before 5 pm. in west Modesto. He was awaiting trial on auto theft charges. Banks and five other inmates were discovered missing from the Honor Farm Thursday night.
Authorities say the men apparently used a metal shower seat to dig a hole through a bathroom wall, then climbed over a razor wire-topped fence. One of the escapees was 30-year-old Kenneth Groomes, who was awaiting trial for an assault with a deadly weapon charge.
The other inmates still at large are were awaiting trial for various theft or drug charges.
