Sonora, CA — Students and faculty at Sonora High School are mourning the passing this morning of former physical education teacher and coach Darla Mayhew.

Principal Terry Clark says Mayhew passed away at about 5:00 this morning from complications stemming from a bone marrow transplant she underwent last week at Stanford University Medical Center.

Mayhew was hospitalized in March after being diagnosed with myelogenous leukemia.

Mayhew was a staff member at Sonora High for more than 20 years. She was the recipient of the Model Coach award from the California Interscholastic Federation in 2003-2004.

Mayhew was also responsible for making the wish for a new artificial turf playing surface at Sonora´s Dunlavy Field featured on the NBC Television show “Three Wishes.”

Clark calls Mayhew a remarkable woman, and her passing a tragic loss.
