Sponsored by:

Merced, CA — Officials at the University of California-Merced say the school has secured more than $15 million in grants and contracts for research and other programs.

The school says most of that money has come from federal agencies. The university spent almost $5.5 million of the funds to bring in staff members and equipment prior to the opening of the campus this year.

Research programs have been set up in each of the school´s three academic departments as well with more expected for the future.

Officials say the money is also being used to fund academic preparation programs in the community through the University´s Center for Academic Partnerships.

U.C. Merced opened September 5th as the 10th and newest campus in the University of California system.

It´s also the first American research university to be built in the 21st century.
