Bobcat Named “Boomer” To Represent UC Merced

Merced, CA — The University of California, Merced, has named its bobcat mascot “Boomer.”
The school chose the Golden Bobcat as its mascot in 2000 and adopted a bobcat kitten last spring after it was found in a bag in the parking lot of Applegate Park Zoo.
All he needed was a name. So when the school opened a week ago, officials ran a contest among the first one-thousand students to pick one. About 170 suggestions came in, and a faculty and staff committee chose the winner.
18-year-old Juliet Moua, of Clovis, submitted the winning name and received an Apple iPod and other prizes.
