State Says Fewer Stores Selling Tobacco To Minors

Sacramento, CA — Only about 10 percent of California merchants who sell tobacco products are breaking a ban on sales to minors.
That´s the conclusion of a random check of 714 businesses by the state Department of Health Services. That´s down from 14 percent last year and 37 percent in 1995.
That was the year the department began gauging the extent of illegal sales by using minors to attempt to buy tobacco. But officials say most tobacco sellers aren´t posting required signs spelling out that it´s illegal to sell to minors.
