Mariposa Man Drowns In Merced River

Mariposa, CA — A Mariposa man is dead after he apparently attempted to swim across the Merced River at a popular swimming area late Sunday afternoon.
The Mariposa County Sheriff´s Office says 55-year-old Victor Deleon and another man were attempting to cross the river near the McCabe Flat Campground when they ran into trouble.
Witnesses say the other man was able to grab onto a low hanging tree branch and pull himself to shore while Deleon was swept downstream.
A river patrol officer was reportedly able to locate Deleon submerged down the river and pull him from the water.
Deputies say resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.
