Sacramento, CA — A bill that offers incentives to contractors who hire Californians to work on state projects for goods and services has passed a committee vote.

Assembly Bill 1654 was approved by the Assembly Business and Education Committee by a vote of 6 – 3 Wednesday.

The bill´s sponsor, Hector De La Torre of South Gate, says the measure will recycle tax dollars to strengthen and fuel the state´s economy.

The legislation would require state agencies to provide a 5% bid preference for private businesses with an employee base made up of at least 90% residents.

The bill has the support of the California Small Business Association, as well as numerous labor unions.
