Roy W. Brings Grand Championship Home

Sponsored by:

Angels Camp, CA — A winless streak that has extended for more than a half century was broken over the weekend at the Calaveras County Jumping Frog Jubilee.

Joseph Kitchell of Angels Camp and his frog Roy W. won the Grand Championship frog jump at the fair yesterday. It´s the first time a home town contestant has taken the championship in 51 years.

The frog is named after the last hometown champion, Roy Weimer who captured the championship in 1954.

The victory caps nearly 20 years of competition in the frog jump for Kitchell, who belongs to the Calaveras Frog Jockeys. Kitchell collected $750 and a trophy after Roy W. marked the winning jump of 19 feet, 4 inches.

Gavin Daly of Sacramento took second place, followed by Lisa Kennedy in third.
