Five High Sierra Camps To Remain Closed Because Of Snow
Yosemite National Park — Five summer camps in the High Sierra won´t open this summer because some areas of the mountains are still covered in deep snow.
Park officials say that the camps Vogelsang, May Lake, Merced Lake, Glen Aulin and Sunrise are still covered in up to 15 feet of snow.
A park spokesman says it´s only the second time since 1916 that the camps have remained closed throughout the year.
The decision to keep the five camps closed does not affect campgrounds on the Yosemite Valley floor.
Meanwhile, officials say Tioga Road is scheduled to open Friday morning at 8:00.
The highway allows visitors to travel through Tuolumne Meadows to the east side of the Sierra Nevada.
