Public Scoping For Yosemite’s El Portal Road Reconstruction

Sponsored by:

Yosemite, Ca — Yosemite National Park is in the planning stages of the reconstruction of El Portal Road from the Pohono Bridge to the Big Oak Flat Road Intersection.

Scott Gediman says the stretch was damaged in the flood of 1997, and is in imminent need of repair. He notes it is a narrow section of road that falls right into the Merced River.

He says if the road would ever become disabled, the only way in and out of Yosemite Valley would be through the South Entrance on Highway 41.

One of the things they do when putting together an environmental assessment, is to ask the public to help scope the project. Gediman says this is a chance for residents to bring up issues that they would like to see addressed in the documents.

Open meetings are being planned for later this month.
