Umpire Arrested For Assault And Battery
Sonora, CA — A Standard Park umpire is facing assault and battery charges after an altercation with a softball player Thursday night.
Tuolumne County Sheriff´s Deputies responded to Standard Park in response to a man who had been assaulted.
They found Gilbert Michel suffering from cuts and bruises to his head and eye. Reports indicate Michel has had an ongoing problem with 36-year-old Vincent Marques, who has umpired several of the man´s softball games.
While watching his team play from the bench, Michel made several comments directed at Marques. After the game, there was a confrontation between Marques and Michel that ended with Marques punching Michel in the face and Michel going to the ground with Marques standing over him.
Statements were taken from several witnesses with the end result being Michel making a citizen´s arrest on Marques for punching him. Deputies transported Marques to the county jail.
