Arrests After Target Shooting Creates Scare In Wilderness Area Outside Yosemite

Sponsored by:

Mono County, CA — The Mono County Sheriff’s Office reports that it received multiple reports from hikers in the Ansel Adams Wilderness area about gunshots being fired on Saturday.

Dispatch could hear the gunshots over the phone, and it drew a heavy multi-agency law enforcement response out of concerns of a possible active shooter on the Parker Lake Trail. Callers hunkered down behind rocks and trees until the shooting stopped.

The Mono County Sheriff’s Office adds, “Responding deputies were able to ascertain where the shots were coming from and, fearing an active shooter, immediately moved toward the sound of fire. They discovered three subjects target shooting north of the trail. The target shooters stopped their activity and complied with deputies’ directions.”

The three target shooters, all from Southern California, were arrested and booked into Mono County Jail for felony charges of Willful Discharge of a Firearm in a Grossly Negligent Manner.

Other agencies that responded included the CHP, federal law enforcement with the US Forest Service, and the Mammoth Lakes Police Department.
